At SMTP2GO, we believe in giving back to our community and making a positive difference. That’s why we encourage our employees to volunteer for causes they care about, such as the UK-based research and support charity Breast Cancer Now.
On April 25th, 2024, Breast Cancer Now hosted The Show – a fashion show like no other – in London. All 24 models, including 22 women and two men, are living with or beyond breast cancer. Much like myself…
After I received my breast cancer diagnosis in 2022, I used this fantastic charity and they helped me through my cancer journey. I’m delighted that I’m out the other side and was able to act as a volunteer at this exclusive fashion show. I was an usher in the gallery room, where the models’ portraits and stories were on display. It was a wonderful (and occasionally emotional) experience and it felt good to be able to pay it forward after all of the charity’s help and support.
All 24 models were taking to the catwalk for the first time – and what a fantastic job they did! The Show is an opportunity for the models to use fashion to celebrate who they have become and reflect on their experience of breast cancer. This year, the charity shone a spotlight on support, and how important it is when it comes to a breast cancer diagnosis. Support comes in many forms: it can come from friends and family, work and colleagues, medical teams, the breast cancer community or the charity’s support services.
The charity offers a ‘buddy’ scheme, called Someone Like Me, where they match you with a trained volunteer who’s had a similar experience. I was matched with a lovely Scottish woman who’d finished her treatment a couple of years before me and she was a guiding light. I spoke to her over the phone every couple of weeks and I’ll be forever grateful for her time, kindness and advice. It’s such a dark, scary time and Breast Cancer Now – and all their volunteers – provide glimmers of light. They’re by your side, every step of the way.
The atmosphere at The Show was something incredibly special – a collective gathering of strength, positivity and resilience. It wasn’t a sad day but rather one of celebration, triumph and joy. I was very happy to be a part of it. Next year, I aspire to grace that catwalk myself!
